Lost/Found a Pet?
What to do if you find a pet
If the pet does not have a tag, please take it to the nearest animal shelter. Click here for a map of area shelters.
If the pet has identification tags, you can contact the owner directly.
If the pet has a rabies tag or license, you can contact phone the number on the tag to obtain the owner’s information.
If you chose to keep the pet in your home while you look for the owner, please contact the nearest shelter to provide information about the pet in case the owner contacts the shelter. You can also post signs in the area where the pet was found and post a “Found” ad on Craig’s List. It is recommended that you do not provide all the details about the animal in the ad so that if someone contacts you to claim the animal, you can ask for a complete description to verify ownership.
What to do if you’ve lost your pet
Visit EVERY shelter. Act fast! Check each shelter daily.
Notify friends and neighbors that your pet is lost.
Contact veterinary clinics in your area. Use their “Lost and Found” bulletin boards.
Check “found” ads and take out a “lost” ad in newspapers and on Craig’s List.
Check websites such as www.craigslist.org, www.dogdetective.com, and www.petharbor.com.
Post fliers in a minimum 3-mile radius of where you lost your pet.
Don’t give up! Pets can be found months after they’re lost.
What you can do to safeguard your pet
Be sure your pet wears a current rabies tag, license tag and an ID tag with your present address and phone numbers.
Make certain your address and phone numbers are on file with the veterinarian who provided your pet’s most recent vaccinations.
Consult your veterinarian to get your pet a microchip ID. Keep your contact information current with the microchip registry. To check your pet’s microchip information, visit http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org.
Spay or neuter you pet! Sterilization eliminates an animal’s reproductive instincts and decreases the chances of its straying from home.
